Following the Portugal-Morocco game was Uruguay-Saudi Arabia. The Arabians, looking for a better defensive effort after their 5-0 loss to Russia, played solid football throughout the match, but struggled to finish in the attacking phase. Luis Suarez returned to form for Uruguay by scoring the lone goal in the 23rd minute. From a corner, Saudi keeper Mohammed Al-Owais missed getting a touch on the ball, which led to Suarez to tap into an empty net. Uruguay continued with better chances overall than the Arabians, but would not find another goal. Edinson Cavani missed a couple of chances to score for Uruguay when his headed in the 80th was just wide, along with a one-on-one chance in the 87th that Al-Owais managed to stop. Uruguay claimed a spot in the Round of 16 with the win and are tied with Russia for first in Group A. Egypt and Saudi Arabia are eliminated.
After these two games, Spain looked desperate to get into the top spot by beating Group B leaders Iran. After an nearly uneventful first half, the one chance coming in the 25th minute when Iran keeper Alireza Beiranvard saved David Silva's free kick, more scoring opportunities occurred. Beiranvard made a double save in the 50th minute, denying Sergio Busquets strike before clearing it out so Lucas Vasquez couldn't pounce on the rebound. Iran's Karim Ansarifard blasted a shot from 8 yards out only denied by the outside netting, and two minutes later, Spain got the game-winner. David Costa found himself surrounded by Iran defenders in the box, when Ramin Rezaeian's attempted poke of the ball deflected off Costa's knee and into the net in the 54th. Iran would get a goal 6 minutes later from a free kick, but it was called back for off-sides after VAR review. In the 70th, Sergio Ramos's low shot was blocked by multiple Iran defenders then Gerald Pique's poke at it was stopped by Beiranvard. Morocco had a header sail over the bar in the 82nd, and Spain finished with a win, now tied with Portugal for first. Iran needs a win/tie over Portugal to make it through, while Morocco is guaranteed last in Group B, and therefore eliminated.
